Doctoral study at The Innovation School provides an opportunity for further research into a wide range of topics related to Design Innovation. Our doctoral candidates embark on PhD inquiries that explore the role of design in contexts such as: accelerating economic renewal and regeneration; developing creative capacity and communities; and enhancing individual and collective wellbeing.

Our practice-based research culture supports candidates as they seek to generate new knowledge and understanding through creative practice, scholarship and criticism. As a member of The Innovation School’s academic community you will be surrounded by peers working on topics that complement your own practice. This results in a dynamic creative  environment that promotes collaboration and the sharing of expertise.

As with all teaching at The Innovation School, there is a strong focus on the social impact of design across all work undertaken by our PhD candidates. You will benefit from the opportunity to broaden your skill set by interacting with experts in topics ranging from sociology to psychology and engineering. Your research may also feed into or overlap with one of The Innovation School’s pioneering postgraduate programmes, which include Collaborative Creativity, Interaction Design and Transformation Design.
